Storage Area Networks is a network especially employed for the communication between computer systems and storage elements. The communication infrastructure of SAN consists of management layer and physical connections, so that the data exchange is safe and robust. The term SAN is mostly associated with block I/O services. A storage system comprises of computer systems, storage devices and all the controlling software, which communicate over a network. SAN was basically launched as a mainframe solution for storing large blocks of data that was flexible in nature. SANs are networks with sound performance dedicated to data delivery between storage and servers. Fiber Channel is the most commonly used SAN technology as it has scalability and high speed to offer. The format in which data is stored is mostly files or blocks. Security is the factor which has to be taken care of in an LAN environment. It is even more important to manage access control.
